Carbon Steel: Properties, Production, Examples and Applications Carbon steel is an iron-carbon alloy containing up to 2.1 wt.% carbon. For carbon steels, there is no minimum specified content of other alloying elements; however, they often contain manganese. The maximum content of manganese, silicon and copper should be less than 1.65 wt.%, 0.6 wt.% and 0.6 wt.%, respectively.

| SPCC/SPCCT: Common & General Use; Characteristics: Suitable for bending and simple deep-drawing operations; these are the most widely used grades; Applications: Refrigerators, rails, switchboards, wire baskets and so on. | |
| SPCD: Suitable for drawing and stamping; Characteristics: Second only to SPCE in terms of the quality of the steel plate, which exhibits a smaller deviation during drawing; Applications: Car chassis, roof panels, etc. | |

| Remarks: SPCCT is a user-specified grade of SPCC which must ensure that the tensile strength and ductility of the grade are maintained. SPCF and SPCG must ensure that there is no ageing (i.e. no loss of tensile deformation properties) after six months’ storage off-site – that is, SPCC and SPCD, SPCE—if stored for a long period—will exhibit changes in mechanical performance, particularly a reduction in cold-stamping performance; they should therefore be used as soon as possible. When ordering from the SPCC series catalogue, provisions must be made in advance regarding hardness and surface finish. | |
